Akbar's Two-Pager

Akbar Harrison INST 6032-Application of Technology, Class 2
Using Technology to facilitate K-12 Instruction
I have been a user of Google’s search engine for many years, but was unaware of the special features offered to help users narrow their queries. These features are worlds unto themselves. Through this assignment I was able to become acquainted with a few of the features.
I began my search as Google basics suggested-using the words that I was looking for. I typed in the title of this paper and pushed search. A wealth of information was found as a result of this query. I
On my first search, I discovered three useful sites. Though the majority of the results had to deal with educational standards for science, I still found them useful.
The first was www.col-ed.org. It offered a host of lesson plans for teachers to use in teaching math and science. All lessons were detailed and explained thoroughly with objectives, materials, and assessment included. The site also offered lessons for all grades.
Another very useful site that I discovered as a result of my query was education.nasa.gov. This site offered a host of teacher and student activities.
NASA offered on-site activities and activities that could be downloaded. They provided virtual games that could be played by young students and mental activities and learning opportunities on-line.
Students and teachers could either participate in national science projects that would be later evaluated and judged by NASA staff. The site also offered a litany of children’s reading resources that addressed certain science topics and included links to other educational resources. Intel at www.intel.com/education/k12 offered a great deal of lessons and information as well. Intel had opportunities for k-12 and higher education alike. The lessons were detailed with objectives, activities, materials, and assessment plans listed.
All in all of my searches on Google was a pleasant experience. In hindsight there were a couple of things that I could have done to make my search more pleasant.
To exclude the sites that had anything to do with technology standards I could have used a – in front of educational standards and typed in “using technology instruction in k-12”. This change would have narrowed my search even more. This search would have focused in on those sites that had something do with using technology instruction.
All of the sites were very helpful and provided a wealth of information. Although when I got to each site and the information was somewhat broad, I was able narrow my focus with the particular site. Some of the tools that I learned in Google made this possible.
I plan to use each site in my instruction this year. I to improve the science and math scores of my students and these sites will aid me in doing so.
I could have narrowed my search even further to include the grade that I was interested in only. I found that the search engine is something that you have to keep working. Over time and with a great deal of practice, you will become better.
